FilzFun runs feature on the Opulent Flower!

A few months ago, I was asked to supply information on my unique flower construction methods to the German felt magazine, Filz Fun. This was to serve as a promotional blurb for upcoming workshops in Amsterdam, at Atelier Fiberfusing, and was generously arranged by the workshop host.

This presented a great opportunity to share the techniques I’ve been working on, along with the story of my journey into Craft. As I was rushing around preparing to leave for a teaching adventure to AU and NZ, I had a hard time editing what would be sent for the article, and presented them with quite a bit of material, including a piece of tutorial for how the flowers are constructed.

THE SPREAD And so, yesterday a friend sent pics of the magazine… What a huge surprise and compliment it was to see a multi page spread of my work! Woo hoo!! Sharing the techniques has been one of the most liberating decisions. There is room for much interpretation with materials and techniques, and I hope to see how it inspires other artists to push the limits of their materials and traditional methods in felt-making.

Kristy Kun

Kristy Kun uses the word synthesis to describe the irreversible bonding of fibers used in her work, but the description goes well beyond referencing how wool fibers tangle and tighten into dense textiles, as it does when she’s making handmade felt.

Encompassing materials and techniques from cross disciplines; Kun’s sculpted forms challenge traditional notions of construction and tenacity—a synthesis, harnessing the strength of the most delicate fibers in juxtaposition against stronger ‘elemental’ undercurrents.
